Trollhunter (2010)

1h43 – ⭐ IMDB: 6.9/10 – Genre: Dark Fantasy – Style: Found Footage / Mockumentary

The Story: Three Norwegian film students set out to make a documentary about a suspected bear poacher. He is not hunting bears.

🎬 Our verdict: Deadpan, visually stunning, and completely serious about its Norse mythology — in the best possible way. Otto Jespersen is one of the great found footage performances. The finale is genuinely epic.

Cloverfield (2008)

1h25 – ⭐ IMDB: 7,0/10 – Review

A going-away party in Manhattan. Something enormous rises from the water and tears the city apart. One camera captures what the news never could.

J.J. Abrams’ $30 million found footage production plays like it cost ten times that — and proves the format works at blockbuster scale. Relentless once it starts, and smarter than it looks. The monster is more effective for being rarely seen. Hollywood rarely commits to found footage this completely.

Alien Abduction (2020)

1h33 – ⭐ IMDB: 6,4/10 – Review

Six friends hold a Zoom séance during lockdown. They invite a spirit in. It accepts.

At 56 minutes, Host is the leanest horror movie you’ll watch this year — no filler, no setup that overstays its welcome, just one relentless escalation from first scare to last. The practical effects punch well above their budget, and the Zoom format isn’t a gimmick — it’s the whole point. Efficient, inventive, and genuinely frightening. The practical effects punch well above their budget

Clown in a Cornfield (2025)

1h33 – ⭐ IMDB: 6,4/10 – Review

Nobody saw this coming. Ryan Coogler — the director of Black Panther and Creed — making a vampire film set in 1930s Mississippi Delta? It shouldn’t work. It absolutely does.

The Story: A teenage girl moves to a small town with a dark history and a local legend involving a clown mascot named Frendo. The legend, it turns out, is more active than anyone is admitting.

Our Opinion: A mid-film twist upends genre conventions in a way that genuinely earns the subversion. Not the scariest film on this list, but one of the most satisfying in terms of pure slasher craft. Good fun with a sharper edge than expected.

Did You Know?

  • On its opening Sunday in the US, Late Night with the Devil grossed exactly $666,666 at the box office. Whether that was engineered by the distributor or a genuine coincidence has never been confirmed — but it’s hard to imagine a better opening weekend number for a film about a deal with the devil.
  • The film was made in Australia by two Australian brothers — Colin and Cameron Cairnes — but is set entirely in 1970s America. Every detail of the period, from the studio lighting to the costumes to the broadcast aesthetic, was constructed from scratch.
