The Story

Twenty years after a stranded alien ship parks itself over Johannesburg, a mid-level bureaucrat overseeing the forced relocation of its refugee occupants gets exposed to something that starts turning him into one of them.

Verdict

What makes this stand out isn’t the mockumentary opening — it’s how quickly the film abandons that structure once things get personal, and never looks back. That shift from detached observation to a story you’re trapped inside of mirrors exactly what happens to Wikus himself. Sharlto Copley’s performance sells that collapse from smug bureaucrat to something genuinely sympathetic almost entirely through body language, since half the film he’s barely recognizable under prosthetics.
