The Story
Two American backpackers arrive in Jerusalem for what’s supposed to be a straightforward holiday. Instead, they end up filming a Biblical-scale nightmare tearing the city apart, all captured through a pair of smart glasses neither of them can afford to take off.
Verdict
Cloverfield’s chaos filtered through Biblical apocalypse, filmed through a genuinely novel gimmick for its time — smart glasses, essentially an early version of Google Glass, worn by the main character throughout. That format gives the film a POV nobody else in this genre was using at the time, and it pays off once things really start escalating. Yes, the execution is a mixed bag and maybe the pacing drags in the first act, but there’s a lot more good here than bad, especially once the scale of what’s actually happening becomes clear. A genuinely ambitious entry that doesn’t get talked about enough. I recommend it!
