The Story
Two journalists follow a friend to a remote, self-sufficient community where his estranged sister lives, only to find that the group’s charismatic leader is holding onto something far darker than the peaceful image they present.
Verdict
Probably one of the best films ever about cults. Everything here works — the performances, the format, the story all come together in a way that’s rare for found footage. Gene Jones as the community’s leader is genuinely one of the best performances the genre has ever produced, quietly terrifying without ever raising his voice much. The parallels to real historical events add a genuine extra layer of dread that I found hard to shake, and knowing it’s inspired by true events makes the whole thing hit really hard. A great one, through and through.
