Director: Zak Penn · Cast: Werner Herzog, Zak Penn, Kitana Baker, Gabriel Beristain

The Story

Director Werner Herzog, playing an exaggerated version of himself, sets out to make a serious documentary about the myth of the Loch Ness Monster. A second crew, filming the making of that documentary, quietly captures his own production falling apart around him.

Verdict

A mockumentary within a mockumentary, and a genuinely funny one — Herzog sending up his own reputation is most of the appeal here. It loses some steam in its second half, and the layered documentary conceit doesn’t always hold up under scrutiny, but it’s a smart, different angle on cryptid horror that nobody else has really attempted.
