The Story
A woman who broke a religious taboo years ago, and cursed her own family because of it, now has to find a way to protect her young daughter from the consequences, pulling the viewer directly into the ritual alongside her.
Verdict
The highest-grossing Taiwanese horror film – and a hit on Netflix. The gimmick of asking the audience to actually chant along with an incantation, without knowing what it really means until much later, is genuinely unsettling in a way I haven’t felt from a found footage film in a while. It’s a slower burn than most entries on this list (and pretty long for found footage), and it clearly owes a debt to Noroi’s structure. But believe me, it earns every bit of your patience.
