The Story
Five American film students secure a grant to retrace a real, unsolved 1959 tragedy in Russia’s Ural Mountains, where nine experienced hikers died under circumstances nobody has ever fully explained. Following the same route, on the same mountain, they start recording phenomena that suggest whatever happened to the original group never actually stopped happening.
Verdict
The real Dyatlov Pass case is one of the most genuinely unsettling unsolved mysteries in modern history, and this film is smart enough to lean on that fact rather than invent something flashier. The first half plays almost like a straight documentary reconstruction, which makes the back half’s turn into full sci-fi horror hit harder than it probably should. Not every viewer will forgive that tonal swing, but myself being a huge fan of sci-fi (and this mystery) i must say i loved it – one of my favourites of all time!
