The Story
Investigators discover hundreds of videotapes hidden in an abandoned house, documenting a decade of one serial killer’s work in disturbing detail.
Verdict
This is not comfortable viewing, and I don’t think it’s trying to be. No ghosts, no monsters, no supernatural crutch to soften anything, just pure human evil presented with almost no restraint. Part of what makes it land so hard is the format itself — recovered evidence, detective interviews, a criminal psychologist weighing in — it plays more like a true-crime documentary than a horror movie, which strips away the usual distance a stylized slasher gives you. MGM actually shelved this one for years before release, and even if the real reasons were more about marketing than content, that history has only added to its reputation as something people genuinely struggled to sit through. I think that’s exactly what makes it one of the most effective, most disturbing entries on this whole list. Not one I’d recommend lightly, but I think it’s genuinely well made.
