I’ve been watching found footage movies for more than 26 years now. I clearly remember standing in line for the Blair Witch Project in 1999, with a friend and his dad, who came along specifically to sneak us in — the film was rated 16+ where I lived in Belgium at the time. And we were only 15. He made sure the cashier believed otherwise, and it worked. Yay!

Since then I’ve watched hundreds of found footage movies. Good ones, terrible ones, movies so obscure I’m not sure anyone else has seen them. This is my attempt at the ultimate list — 66 films, organized by theme rather than ranked top to bottom.

I’m not always in agreement with the consensus on a few of these — 4-5 entries here I’d personally rate lower than their reputation suggests. But they’re widely acclaimed within the genre, so I’ve kept them anyway. Make no mistake though: Apart from 4-5 entries, this list MY own opinion, built from 26 years of actually watching this stuff, not an attempt at some neutral, crowd-sourced ranking.

My opinion: This is about as tight as found footage gets — real-time, one location, and every single shot earns its place. What starts as a straightforward outbreak film quietly becomes something else entirely, and the last ten minutes are where it really separates itself from every imitator that came after.

A goodbye party in Manhattan turns into a scramble through collapsing streets when something enormous starts tearing the city apart — all caught on one guest’s camcorder.

My opinion: Found Footage meets Godzilla! This movie is proof the format could scale to a blockbuster budget without losing what makes it work. The Statue of Liberty’s head skidding down the street is still one of the genre’s defining images.

A young couple sets a camera up in their bedroom to catch whatever’s been disturbing their sleep at night. It obliges — and keeps escalating.

My opinion: Zero budget, next to no special effects, and it still works a decade-plus later. Sound design and patience carrying an entire film — most of today’s found footage is still copying its homework. This is the movie that single-handedly revived the genre after Blair Witch, and honestly, the whole modern wave probably doesn’t happen without it.

A documentary crew embeds with a charming, remorseless killer as he walks them through his daily routine — until the crew stops filming from a distance and starts pitching in.

My opinion: A genuine relic, made years before found footage was even a recognized genre, and it’s aged in a way that makes it feel almost prophetic now. What makes it so good is how it implicates the camera crew themselves, they stop being observers and start being accomplices, and by the time you notice that shift, you’ve been pulled into the same complicity as an audience member. One of the sharpest character studies the genre has produced.

Three film students hike into Maryland’s Black Hills Forest to shoot a documentary about a local witch legend. They never come back — this is the footage that was found afterward.

My opinion: The film that started this whole genre, and it still holds up decades later. It’s not my personal favorite in the genre, but I can’t deny its impact — no jump scares, barely any budget, and it’s still more unsettling than most of what’s come since, proof that dread built through sound and suggestion beats almost anything money can buy. If you’ve somehow never seen it, this is the one to start with.

The scariest infections in found footage rarely announce themselves — they spread quietly, through a bite, a bad batch of water, or a virus nobody saw coming, until the cameras are the only thing left running.

A small Maryland town’s Fourth of July celebration spirals into chaos after a parasitic outbreak tied to environmental contamination starts spreading through the water supply, assembled entirely from confiscated recordings.

My opinion: The found footage angle makes the whole thing feel disturbingly plausible, like something pieced together from an actual cover-up rather than a script. It looks and feels far bigger than its budget, and Barry Levinson clearly took this seriously rather than just chasing a trend — that’s exactly why it’s one of the best outbreak horror movies out there.

Two friends turn a trip around the world into a travel-vlog series — until a stranger’s bite starts changing one of them into something that needs to feed.

My opinion: I am not usually a big vampire guy, but this one completely changed my mind — mostly because it barely feels like a traditional vampire film at all. No capes, no gothic mythology, it plays more like an infection slowly taking over. The transformation itself is genuinely well done, the jumps, the growing strength, all building up in a way that feels earned rather than sudden.

Two sisters barricade themselves at home as a fast-moving parasitic infection tears through their quiet suburb, forced into an impossible call once it reaches their own front door.

My opinion: A solid Blumhouse entry that does exactly what it sets out to do — competent tension, a genuinely creepy central threat, and a lean runtime that never overstays its welcome. Not the flashiest film on this list, but it earns its spot through sheer efficiency.

My opinion: Biblical apocalypse. Google Glasses. Jerusalem. Slow to kick into gear, but once it does, it goes full Cloverfield-scale chaos and doesn’t let up.

A quiet Arizona border town is wiped out overnight, and suspicion falls entirely on the one survivor left — until a roll of undeveloped photographs tells a very different story about what really happened.

My opinion: Found photos rather than found footage, and that small shift changes everything about how this one lands. There’s something almost more dreadful about still images than moving footage, the horror sits frozen, and you’re left staring at it rather than watching it pass. It’s told as a mockumentary, interviews woven around the photographs. The final two minutes fumble the landing a little, which is a shame for an otherwise very good entry.

Diary of the Dead

A group of film students shooting their own low-budget horror movie in the woods find their fiction overtaken by reality once the actual dead start getting up and walking.

My opinion: Romero’s found-footage experiment, and one I’m genuinely fond of. The tone swings hard between grim survival horror and broad comic relief within the same scene, which is very much his signature style if you know his other work. Too polished to fully pass as amateur footage, but the social commentary and the kills both still land.

A real horror director sets out to make a documentary about cryptid mythology, only to end up following a retired detective who claims he’s been tracking actual, physical monsters underground for years.

My opinion: The horror-nerd cameos and easter eggs are genuinely fun if you know the genre, and the creature effects, once they finally show up, are worth the wait. The lead playing himself as the protagonist gets a bit self-indulgent by the end, but that’s a minor gripe against an otherwise solid, entertaining watch.

A group of friends heading into the remote Texas woods for a weekend getaway ends up hunted by something the title flatly insists is real — and very, very angry about it.

My opinion: The title alone tells you exactly what you’re getting. This isn’t a slow-burn, atmosphere-first Bigfoot film — it’s a straight creature-feature chase from fairly early on, aggressive and fast-paced. And no, it’s not cheesy whatsoever, it takes the whole thing completely seriously.

A couple camps out in the same forest tied to a famous Bigfoot sighting, hoping to capture proof of their own — and instead find themselves the ones being tracked.

My opinion: The opposite of Exists in almost every way — patient instead of aggressive, restrained instead of full-throttle. Bigfoot as an unseen, Blair Witch-style threat, and it works. The ending will (may?) frustrate anyone who wants a clean answer.

Director Werner Herzog, playing himself, sets out to make a serious documentary about the myth of the Loch Ness Monster — and finds his own production quietly falling apart while a second crew films the meltdown.

My opinion: A mockumentary within a mockumentary, and a genuinely funny one — Herzog playing an exaggerated version of himself is most of the appeal. Loses some steam in its second half, and the “documentary” conceit doesn’t always hold up to scrutiny, but it’s a smart, different angle on the cryptid genre.

A journalist chasing down a government cover-up follows the trail into a sprawling network of abandoned rail tunnels beneath Sydney — and finds out exactly why the government wanted it covered up.

My opinion: An Australian film, really liked that one. The tunnel system itself is doing more work than any effects budget could, claustrophobic in a way that’s hard to fake with a set. The second half especially is genuinely great, suspense that just keeps ratcheting up.

My opinion: Don’t let the title fool you into expecting schlock. A genuinely well-shot Norwegian film that takes its own folklore completely seriously, dry humor and all.

A privately funded international crew travels to Jupiter’s moon Europa searching for signs of life beneath the ice, recording everything as the mission slowly goes wrong.

My opinion: The 2001 comparison is unavoidable, a crew traveling to Jupiter’s orbit chasing something genuinely unknown, and this earns it. Barely horror at all, more patient hard sci-fi with real dread underneath, and it captures that same sense of cosmic wonder Clarke’s work is known for, just on a fraction of the budget. Definitely in my personal top 5 — if you love good sci-fi, probably in yours too.

A family power outage sends a teenage son out to investigate — camera rolling — and what he films follows him and his brothers straight back to their own house.

My opinion: If you want a single film to explain why alien-abduction found footage works, this is the one. Close to perfect — grainy, unpolished, and the family at the center never once feels like actors reciting lines. A real gem!

Decades of unexplained disappearances in a small Alaskan town point toward something far bigger than local police are willing to admit — told through a mix of dramatization and recovered footage.

My opinion: The “real footage recovered from patient sessions” conceit is a clever hook, even if the film doesn’t fully commit to it. Milla Jovovich brings genuine weight to the role, and the small-town-Alaska setting does more atmospheric work than the plot itself. Not groundbreaking, but solid enough for an enjoyable found footage movie night.

My opinion: A sweet, E.T.-flavored family adventure hiding inside a found footage horror list. Though it never really explains why any of this footage exists in the first place. A genuinely charming story about friendship and growing up.

Twenty years after a stranded alien ship parks over Johannesburg, a bureaucrat overseeing the forced relocation of its refugee occupants starts turning into one himself.

My opinion: Only partly found footage, and it barely matters — the mockumentary opening is the springboard for one of the smartest, angriest alien films ever made. Sharlto Copley’s physical and emotional transformation is one of the best performances found footage has ever produced, and the social commentary never once feels like homework.

Three teenagers gain telekinetic powers after exposure to something buried underground, and start filming the fallout as those powers pull them in very different directions.

My opinion: A superhero story as found footage, and it works extremely well. Strong, believable characters with emotional weight carry the whole thing, and DeHaan’s slow unraveling hits harder than most studio superhero leads ever get the chance to show. And yes, you’ll get your fair share of action!

Area 51

Three young conspiracy theorists sneak onto the grounds of Area 51 to finally get proof of what’s actually being hidden there.

My opinion: Not a life-changing film, but i just liked it. Small-scale infiltration horror for most of the runtime, then the last 20 minutes really escalate into something tense. Don’t expect an Oscar-worthy movie, just a solid, enjoyable watch.

A group of students retraces the route of the real, unsolved 1959 Dyatlov Pass incident to shoot a documentary — and the deeper they dig into what actually happened there, the worse things get.

My opinion: A film crew investigating on of the most famous unsolved mysteries of modern history: The obvious subject for a found footage film… And it’s handled really well! A little slow to start, then commits hard to its sci-fi angle in the back half – which has a really interesting take on the whole thing. I must say i really liked this one, and if i had to choose my top 5 best found footage movies ever, i guess Devil’s Pass will be in it.

The genre’s oldest trick, still its most reliable: point a camera at the dark and wait. These are the séances, the haunted asylums, and the ghost hunts that actually found something.

Six friends hire a medium for a Zoom séance during lockdown. What answers isn’t who they invited, and it doesn’t stay confined to one screen.

My opinion: Probably the most tense Zoom call you’ll ever experience. 56 minutes of pure dread, not a single moment of calm, shot in a similar spirit to the Unfriended films, and it earns the comparison. Great acting, genuinely terrifying moments, and effects that punch way above a low budget. Once it gets going, it doesn’t let go.

Five years after fifteen people died on opening night of a Halloween haunted-house tour, a documentary crew returns to the scene to find out what the official story left out.

My opinion: Solid, well-crafted haunted-attraction horror, though I don’t think it fully earns the “best haunted house film ever made” reputation it’s gotten. Worth watching regardless.

A BBC crew broadcasts a live Halloween-night investigation into Britain’s most notoriously haunted house — and the “live” part turns out to be a serious problem.

My opinion: A UK TV movie that was genuinely ahead of its time. The real story is almost as good as the film itself — broadcast live on Halloween 1992, it convinced enough of the country it was real to spark a full-blown controversy afterward.

After a teenage girl drowns, her grieving family starts noticing something in old photos and home videos that shouldn’t be there — and it leads them somewhere none of them expected.

My opinion: No cheap scares, no gore, just very convincing storytelling through interviews and recovered footage. The twists genuinely surprise, and the whole thing lingers longer than most louder films manage.

A horror web-series crew travels to a real, abandoned Korean asylum to livestream a night inside — and finds a lot more waiting for them than viewers.

My opinion: Found footage from Korea. What starts as a fairly standard livestream setup turns into something genuinely tense once the location’s real history starts bleeding into the fiction. The last 30 minutes are genuinely worth the wait.

My opinion: Fans of Grave Encounters will feel right at home — same ghost-hunting-crew setup, but the practical effects here are even stronger, with barely any CG in sight.

A ghost-hunting reality show crew locks themselves inside an abandoned psychiatric hospital for what’s supposed to be another fake haunting. It isn’t.

My opinion: A ghost-hunting TV show going wrong, or right, depending on how you look at it. This one commits fully to that premise, and honestly, it’s a lot better than you would expect for such a cheesy storyline.

Rituals, exorcisms, secret societies, and the things that answer when someone summons them on purpose — this is the genre’s largest, most crowded corner, and for good reason.

The Taking of Deborah Logan

An elderly woman battling Alzheimer’s agrees to let a documentary crew film her decline. What they capture instead is something far darker than dementia.

My opinion: In my personal Top 3. The last 25-30 minutes are among the best found footage has to offer. Riveting, intense, no chance to catch your breath. Strong acting throughout, and a genuinely clever spin on the Alzheimer’s-or-possessed ambiguity that runs through the whole film.

A struggling 1977 late-night talk show attempts a ratings-saving Halloween special with a live séance — and unleashes something into the broadcast that never leaves the screen.

My opinion: One of the strongest entries the genre has produced in years. David Dastmalchian’s performance as the host anchors the whole thing, and I love how well it captures that warm, feel-good atmosphere of old late-night TV before slowly unraveling it into genuine dread.

The Last Exorcism

A disillusioned evangelical preacher lets a documentary crew film what he insists will be his final exorcism — a stunt meant to expose the whole practice as fraud.

My opinion: Higher budget than most possession films, and it shows in the right ways. Nothing new plot-wise, but the lead character is unexpectedly likable — a rarity for a genre that usually treats its cast as disposable. Some may find the ending unsatisfying; it worked fine for me!

A skeptic sets out to disprove the paranormal by deliberately letting himself be possessed by increasingly powerful demons, hoping the results will bring back his dead wife.

My opinion: Better than expected. Strong acting, and the lighting and color work genuinely elevates the possession sequences. Not original, and not The Exorcist, but it gets the job done really well.

The Borderlands (aka Final Prayer)

A pair of Vatican-sent investigators are dispatched to a remote English church to debunk a reported miracle — and find something considerably harder to explain away.

My opinion: Well acted, unexpectedly funny at points thanks to the tech specialist character, and genuinely disturbing when it wants to be. The ending catches you off guard.

Noroi: The Curse

A documentary filmmaker chases down a string of seemingly unconnected paranormal incidents that all trace back to the legend of an ancient demon.

My opinion: Genuinely creepy and disturbing, especially by the end. Unusually long for the genre at nearly two hours, and the pace is deliberately slow — but that patience is exactly what makes it work.

A news crew visits a remote self-sufficient community to check on a friend’s sister — and finds themselves trapped inside an isolated cult on the verge of catastrophe.

My opinion: Based on a true story, which I only realized after watching — googling it afterward genuinely shook me. That extra layer of dread elevates what’s already a very solid movie. Not doing anything new structurally, but it does everything it’s doing extremely well, and the acting from the cult leader is genuinely great. Watch it, and only then search infos about the events.

Two filmmakers researching conspiracy theories for a documentary stumble onto something real — an ancient secret society with plans of its own.

My opinion: Strong build-up, especially in the last twenty minutes. The ending won’t satisfy everyone who wants a clean resolution, but given the subject matter — actual conspiracies rarely wrap up neatly either — that’s probably the point.

A woman who broke a religious taboo six years ago and cursed her family now has to protect her young daughter from the consequences — by pulling the viewer directly into the ritual with her.

My opinion: A genuine phenomenon in Taiwan, and honestly, it deserves to be. Dual timelines, folk-horror dread, and a structure that owes a real debt to Noroi — but it finds its own identity through sheer patience and commitment to its own internal logic. Not a quick watch, and better for it.

My opinion: It’s less a found footage film and more a paranoid thriller wearing the format (pretty) loosely, but the ideas about government experimentation are genuinely unsettling enough to earn its spot. Ted Levine is the reason to watch it.

My opinion: Very well known, and genuinely something special knowing this was shot in the actual Paris catacombs. It goes a bit far out by the end, stranger and more disorienting than I expected, but I still think it’s one of the best entries this genre has to offer.

My opinion: This is the one to watch on Halloween night. It’s not a perfect film, and some of the scares lean predictable by the back half, but it nails the seasonal atmosphere better than almost anything else on this list, and that counts for a lot. Fun, atmospheric, and packed with genuinely great mask and costume work — exactly the mood you want on the one night a year that’s actually about this stuff!

It’s since grown into a small franchise of its own, which speaks to how much this restrained approach actually resonated with people.

My opinion: No horror here — this is a found footage crime drama, and one of the format’s finest non-horror uses. I’ll admit it didn’t grab me right away, and it felt a little long at first, but the more I sat with it afterward, the more I realized how good it actually is. Gyllenhaal and Peña’s chemistry carries the film completely, and the intimacy of the format makes the violence hit far harder than a conventionally shot version ever would.

No cameras needed when the screen itself is the whole story — laptops, webcams, and social profiles doing all the work a camcorder used to.

One of the creepiest, most effective moments the format has ever produced. If you’re into supernatural horror, this one’s for you — fast-paced, with genuinely good scares throughout.

My opinion: Loved the first one, and this sequel somehow finds a way to improve on it anyway. It shifts away from the ghost angle entirely into a grounded, genuinely nasty dark-web conspiracy, and that change works. More balanced cast, a couple of genuinely good scares, and it keeps the tension right up to the end.

The werewolf encounters especially had me laughing out loud, and I never once felt like the film was running out of ideas across the runtime. One of my favorite comedic entries on this whole list.

My opinion: A big, loud, enjoyable popcorn movie that happens to use handheld cameras instead of a traditional crew. The found footage angle is more style than substance here (though it works great), but the disaster sequences themselves are genuinely well done, and it’s a fun watch, especially with Sarah Wayne Callies from The Walking Dead in the cast. That’s really all this one is trying to deliver, and it does it well.

What a year. I don’t say that lightly — 2025 delivered more genuinely good horror films than any year I can remember in recent memory. From a vampire epic that nobody saw coming to a robot girlfriend thriller that quietly became one of the best films of the year, the genre outdid itself.

What follows is my personal selection of the 13 best horror films of 2025. The order is deliberately varied — this isn’t a strict ranking, it’s a curated list designed to cover as much ground as possible. From supernatural horror to slashers, from prestige A24 to gleeful gore, there’s something here for every kind of horror fan.

And yes — found footage gets its own section at the end. It always does on this site.

Honorable Mentions

Before we get to the top 13 — a few words about the films that almost made it. These are all worth your time, even if they didn’t quite crack the list.

I had high hopes for Hallow Road and came away with mixed feelings. Not essential, but solid atmospheric horror for patient viewers.

The sequel nobody asked for but everyone enjoyed — Black Phone 2 delivers more of what made the original work. Ethan Hawke back, Scott Derrickson back, and enough genuine dread to justify its existence. Doesn’t surpass the original, but doesn’t embarrass it either.

Quietly devastating and not for everyone — The Long Walk is the kind of slow-burn that won’t make mainstream lists but deserves to be on yours. If you’re patient enough to let it breathe, it lingers.

The one that genuinely surprised me this year was Good Boy. RT critics called it “visually striking and emotionally devastating” — a horror film that refuses to behave like one. Ambitious, unusual, and unlike anything else on this list.

More thriller than horror, but Drop earns its place here. Meghann Fahy plays a woman on a first date who starts receiving anonymous threats on her phone — and has to navigate increasingly dangerous situations while keeping up the appearance of a normal evening. Relentlessly tense, Hitchcockian, and the year’s best popcorn movie.

And finally — the most underseen film of 2025. The Surrender is a restrained, genuinely unsettling mother-daughter story pushed to its breaking point by a mysterious stranger. A remarkable feature debut from director Julia Max that deserves a much larger audience.

The 13 Best Horror Movies of 2025

The order below is deliberately varied — think of it less as a ranking and more as a curated evening’s programming. Something for everyone.

1. Sinners

Nobody saw this coming. Ryan Coogler — the director of Black Panther and Creed — making a vampire film set in 1930s Mississippi Delta? It shouldn’t work. It absolutely does.

The Story: Twin brothers (both played by Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown to open a juke joint. On opening night, something arrives at the door that the music and the whiskey can’t keep out.

→ The rare horror film that earns the word “epic.” Rich, layered, and shot with extraordinary confidence. Whether it counts as horror is a conversation worth having — it’s also a period drama, a blues film, and a meditation on Black American history. The 97% on RT is no accident.

2. Weapons

The second film from Zach Cregger — director of Barbarian — arrived with enormous expectations. It met them.

The Story: A classroom of children runs out into the night and disappears. A fractured, non-linear mystery gradually reveals something deeply wrong at the heart of a small American town.

Less a trap springing shut than a slow creeping realisation that everything is connected. Amy Madigan as the villain Gladys is one of the year’s most memorable screen presences. I found myself thinking about this one for days.

3. Companion

The sleeper hit of the year. Undervalued in theatres, destined to be a cult classic on streaming. It also made it in our list of the best AI Horror & Sci-Fi movies.

The Story: Iris (Sophie Thatcher) is the perfect girlfriend — attentive, warm, devoted. She’s also not human. When she and her boyfriend join friends at a remote lake house, the carefully constructed reality of their relationship begins to unravel.

Smarter than its premise suggests and considerably darker than its marketing implied. Sophie Thatcher is extraordinary. The twists escalate with impressive discipline. I went in expecting a fun sci-fi thriller and came out genuinely shaken.

4. Final Destination: Bloodlines

Fourteen years after the last instalment, Death is back. And it turns out the formula still works.

The Story: A college student has a premonition that saves her family from a catastrophic accident — but Death doesn’t forget who it was owed. The surviving family members begin dying in elaborate, unavoidable sequences.

Using family rather than strangers as the group Death is hunting raises the emotional stakes considerably. The opening dream setpiece is one of the most inventively brutal sequences in the franchise’s history. Not high art. Exactly what it promises to be.

5. Together

The most uncomfortable film on this list — and I mean that as a compliment.

The Story: A couple in a deeply dysfunctional relationship find themselves increasingly, literally bound to each other during a home invasion. Less a thriller than a dissection of codependency taken to its extreme conclusion.

Uses genre mechanics to say something genuinely disturbing about relationships. Not a comfortable watch — designed not to be. Not for everyone. Absolutely for me.

6. The Ugly Stepsister

The Cinderella story you didn’t know you needed — and definitely didn’t expect to be this disturbing.

The Story: A dark reimagining of the classic fairy tale, told from the stepsister’s perspective as she desperately tries to fit into the glass slipper by any means necessary. Body horror ensues.

One of the year’s most original films — a body horror fairy tale that uses the original story’s cruelty as its launch pad. The practical effects are extraordinary. Will split audiences cleanly down the middle. I was firmly on the side that loved it.

7. Bring Her Back

The follow-up to Talk to Me from the Philippou brothers — and a very different kind of horror.

The Story: A grieving father hires a mysterious stranger to bring back his late wife. Sally Hawkins plays the stranger. What she brings back is not quite what was promised.

Bleaker and slower than Talk to Me, and deliberately so. Sally Hawkins is extraordinary — quietly terrifying in a way that stays with you. Some found it too one-note. I found it haunting.

8. 28 Years Later

Danny Boyle returns to the universe he created. The result is exactly what the franchise needed.

The Story: Three decades after the rage virus devastated Britain, a young man ventures beyond the boundaries of his isolated community for the first time — and finds a world that has moved on in ways nobody expected.

Not as viscerally terrifying as 28 Days Later — but it’s not trying to be. This is a broader, stranger, more ambitious film. It divided audiences and I understand why. I thought it was bold, and bold counts for something.

9. Dangerous Animals

The underseen gem of the year’s mainstream horror releases.

The Story: A woman matches with a charming stranger on a dating app and agrees to meet him in an isolated location. What begins as a thriller about online predators becomes something considerably more complex.

Subverts its premise at exactly the right moment and in exactly the right direction. Lean, precise, and smarter than it looks. The kind of film that rewards going in with as little information as possible.

10. The Monkey

Osgood Perkins continues his remarkable run — and delivers the most fun horror film of the year.

The Story: Twin brothers discover their late father’s wind-up monkey toy. When it plays its little cymbals, someone nearby dies. They separate and throw it away. It keeps coming back.

Gleefully mean-spirited and completely aware of it. The Monkey isn’t trying to scare you — it’s trying to make you laugh and wince simultaneously, and it succeeds with remarkable consistency. The deaths are inventive, the tone is pitch perfect, and Perkins clearly had a great time making it.

11. Frankenstein

Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited adaptation of the classic novel — and it was worth the wait.

The Story: Set in 19th century Eastern Europe, a creature born from the experiments of Dr. Victor Frankenstein is hunted down forty years later by another scientist who wishes to continue the work. Oscar Isaac plays the creature.

Del Toro brings his signature visual language and genuine emotional weight to a story that has been told many times and rarely this well. Not a horror film in any conventional sense — more a gothic tragedy. But unmissable for anyone who cares about what the genre can do at its most ambitious.

12. Clown in a Cornfield

More clever than the name implies — considerably more clever, actually.

The Story: A teenage girl moves to a small town with a dark history and a local legend involving a clown mascot named Frendo. The legend, it turns out, is more active than anyone is admitting.

A mid-film twist upends genre conventions in a way that genuinely earns the subversion. Not the scariest film on this list, but one of the most satisfying in terms of pure slasher craft. Good fun with a sharper edge than expected.

13. Until Dawn

The video game adaptation nobody expected to work — and that works better than it has any right to.

The Story: A group of friends return to the mountain resort where another group of friends disappeared a year earlier. They find themselves trapped in a loop of increasingly violent scenarios with one rule: survive until dawn.

The loop mechanic is lifted directly from the game and translated to film with more intelligence than most video game adaptations manage. Not profound. Genuinely entertaining, inventive with its kills, and proof that the right source material in the right hands can surprise you.

Outstanding Found Footage of 2025 — And a Look Ahead

V/H/S Halloween (2025) earned 94% on Rotten Tomatoes — making it not just the strongest V/H/S instalment in years but one of the best anthology horror films of the entire year. The Halloween theme gives the segments a cohesion that the franchise sometimes lacks, and the quality across the board is remarkably consistent. If you drifted away from V/H/S after the earlier entries, this is the one to bring you back. On pure quality it belongs in the main top 13 — I kept it here because it feels more at home in its own category.

Horror in the High Desert 4 (2025) — the most committed pure found footage series still running. Dutch Marich’s films operate at the opposite end of the budget spectrum from Backrooms — lo-fi, deliberately paced, and effective in ways that bigger productions rarely manage. If you haven’t discovered the series yet, start at the beginning. By the fourth instalment, Marich has refined his approach to something genuinely distinctive.

Hell House LLC: Lineage (2025) — the franchise continues to find new angles on its haunted house mythology, and Lineage is another solid entry in a series that has outlasted most of its found footage contemporaries. Not the strongest instalment, but further proof that Stephen Cognetti hasn’t run out of ideas. If you haven’t worked through the Hell House LLC series yet, now is a good time to start.

The hook: One reviewer put it perfectly — strip out the phones and the app, and this premise could’ve come straight out of the 90s. It’s a straightforward, well-staged supernatural slasher with a modern gimmick bolted on, and it’s all the more fun for not overthinking it. Not scary in any lasting way, but a genuinely good time.

The hook: An Indian screenlife thriller, shot 80% on a phone, that plays like a genuinely current update to Black Mirror’s whole thesis — you don’t get erased from the internet, the internet decides what to do with you instead. Ananya Panday is convincingly unraveling throughout.

An agoraphobic tech worker reviewing smart-speaker recordings for a company that makes an Alexa-style assistant stumbles onto evidence of a violent crime — and has to leave her apartment for the first time in years to do anything about it.

The hook: A Soderbergh thriller more than horror, but it belongs here for what it’s actually about — the always-listening smart speaker in your home, and the company quietly deciding what to do with what it hears. Made during real COVID lockdown conditions, and it shows in the best way. Zoë Kravitz is excellent.

Twenty-four films, three decades, and one throughline: the internet has never actually needed a ghost to be frightening. Pulse and FeardotCom bolted a haunting onto a dial-up modem because that’s the horror vocabulary Hollywood had in 2002. Twenty years later, Kimi and CTRL don’t need a haunting at all — the horror is just what the technology is already doing, quietly, in the background, with your permission buried somewhere in the terms of service.

That’s the real arc across this list. Early internet horror treated the web as a place something evil could get in through — a website, a signal, a chat room. The more recent films treat the technology itself as the thing that was never fully on your side to begin with. Cam doesn’t need a demon; the demon is not owning your own image anymore. CTRL doesn’t need a ghost; the ghost is an app you gave permission to delete your ex.

Backrooms sits at the exact center of that shift — a film that didn’t just borrow the internet’s aesthetic the way Pulse or FeardotCom did, but was literally born on the internet first, as a piece of collaborative folklore, before it ever became a script.
